Thai Nguyen city is the concentrations of most of factories and industrial complex of Thai Nguyen province such as Thai Nguyen Iron and Steel Industrial Zone, Cao Ngan Thermoelectricity Factory, Lu Xa and Quan Trieu Cement Factory, and Khanh Hoa Coal Mining Area…These industrial factories have contributed to impulse the development of the society-economy of the city. However, they cause the habitat pollution, especially air pollution in Thai Nguyen. This is an urgent matter which has serious impacts on manufacturing, living standard, and health of the residents.

Reality

According to the result of environmental status of Thai Nguyen Department of Resources and Environment, some areas of the city have increasing the dust pollution as Gang Thep area, August Revolution Road, and the sector of Quan Trieu Ward, which is represented by the dust concentrations in the air exceeding the permitted level 1 to 5 times.

This includes the units that possibly generate toxic gases like SO2, dust of metals (metallurgy factories), dust of silic (Cement plants), and dangerous organic compounds (coke plants)…All these plants are located in the densely residential areas, and the fact that these units have few the air handling systems or they might work inefficiently.

Impacts of air pollution

The adverse effects of air pollution, such as hastening the aging process, reducing the function of lung, catching asthma easily, bronchitis, even cancer…In recent years, diseases referring to air pollution caught by children, which tends to rise highly, notably asthma, respiratory infections, tuberculosis, pneumonia, cerebral palsy, cancer, and inborn deformity… and overall the reduction in lung function as a result of air pollution. Earlier, air pollution is also defined as a cause of an increased rate of people catching respiratory diseases and cardiovascular. Thus, via many different ways, air pollution has affected the locals’ lives and become more and more serious.

Solution:

To control and limit the pollution of the industrial zone to the atmosphere, Thai Nguyen People's Committee collaborates with the departments and agencies in Thai Nguyen province; Institute of Science and Technology and Environment - Ha Noi University of Polytechnic, Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development implemented a project "control and minimize air pollution in Thai Nguyen City."

The project was implemented in Thai Nguyen city in the period between 2013 and 2018. The project launched to assess the status of air quality in Thai Nguyen city, and indentified the causes of air pollution in Thai Nguyen city; proposed specific solutions to control and reduce air pollution Thai Nguyen city.

With investment from the budget of Thai Nguyen environmental protection career and the available local resources, along with the emerging environment, which require to give the short-term measures for the period from 2013 to 2018. The short-term projects are: Building regulations for air protection in Thai Nguyen city, building air quality monitoring network for Thai Nguyen city; Building a relocation project that removes plants and factories out of the residential areas and concentrates them into industrial zones end winds of Thai Nguyen city; Building Thai Nguyen air quality monitoring stations located in the center environmental and technological monitoring; Building public car wash station at the gateway to downtown.

However, for successful projects in the period between 2013 and 2018, it’s necessary to get the prior attention and investment capital for the project. Therefore, Thai Nguyen People's Committee always promotes administrative reform, develops suitable mechanisms and policies to the new situation in order to mobilize potential resources for development investment, create the favorable investment environment. To invite donations, attract investment basing on the selection of investing project logically and efficiently in order to ensure sustainable development and environmental protection. It aims at minimizing the impact, the spread of air pollution at present in Thai Nguyen city and carry out environmental protection well in socio - economic development, our province will make rapid development, sustainability in order to become an industrialized province with developed economy and quality of life of community residents increasingly improved and enhanced.
